The Design Museum in London has revealed details of an upcoming exhibition that will tell the design story of Italian car brand Ferrari.

Ferrari: Under the Skin has been created by the Design Museum in collaboration with the car manufacturer and will showcase 70 years of car production, spanning from the first Ferrari car in 1947 up until the present day.

The exhibition will celebrate founder Enzo Ferrari, a racing car driver who competed for Alfa Romeo, launched his own, eponymous 12-cylinder engine car in 1947, and went on to build up a loyal clientele of rich and famous patrons for the brand.

Clay and wood models, original drawings…

Exhibits on display will include early design models, ranging from wind tunnel models to hand-sculpted models in both clay and wood, drawings, memorabilia and archival material.

Some of the most famous Ferrari cars seen on roads and racing tracks throughout its history will also be on display, including the 1962 GT Lusso and 2017 GTC4Lusso.

Exhibition curator Andrew Nahum, says: “Ferrari’s story has been one of the great adventures of the industrial age. It also represents an absorbing case study in design and development.

“Private world of automotive design”

“Ferrari uses the subtle and often unseen techniques of automobile design but with the utmost care and precision, and the exhibition provides an insight into the history and practice of the whole private world of automotive design.”

A forerunner to the exhibition is currently on show at the Museo Ferrari in Maranello, Italy.

Ferrari: Under the Skin will run from 15 November 2017 – 15 April 2018 at the Design Museum, 224-238 Kensington High Street, Kensington, London W8 6AG. Tickets are priced at £9-£18. For more information head to the Design Museum’s site .
